In diesem Jahr bringt der Sommer nicht nur Hitzewellen, sondern ganze Hitzeperioden mit Temperaturen bis zu 40 °C. In den Jahren 2018 bis 2020 kam es infolge starker Sommerhitze zu etwa 19.000 zusätzlichen Todesfällen. Grund für diese Todesfälle waren Überbelastung des Herz-Kreislauf-Systems, Exsikkosen und Hitzschläge. Besonders ältere Menschen sowie Säuglinge und Kleinkinder gelten als Risikogruppen.
