Derzeit dürfen sich Apothekenleiter nur von anderen Apothekern, Apothekerassistenten oder Pharmazieingenieuren vertreten lassen. Bei den beiden letzteren Berufsgruppen gibt es allerdings zusätzliche Auflagen und Einschränkungen, zudem werden diese durch das Erreichen des Rentenalters sukzessive aussterben. Zusätzlich schlägt der allgemeine Fachkräftemangel zu Buche.
