Zu den häufigsten Symptomen gehören zu Beginn meist Schnupfen, nichtproduktiver Husten, evtl. Pharyngitis, die eher die oberen Atemwege betreffen. Humane langwirksame monoklonale Antikörper wie Nirsevimab (Beyfortus<sup style="line-height:0;">®</sup>), der sich gegen die Präfusionskonformation des Fusionsproteins von RSV richtet, blockieren den Viruseintritt in die Zelle und schützen so den Säugling vor einem schweren Verlauf der Erkrankung. So hängt der Immunschutz von der Immunogenität des Impfstoffs bei der Mutter ab und wird durch den Zeitpunkt der Impfung bestimmt. Wie lange der Impfschutz besteht, kann somit variieren. Nach Datenauswertungen über Wirksamkeit und Sicherheit des Wirkstoffs veröffentlichte die Ständige Impfkommission (STIKO) nun eine neue Empfehlung zur Pneumokokken-Impfung bei Erwachsenen. Demnach sollen Erwachsene ausschließlich mit diesem Vakzin gegen Pneumokokken geimpft werden.
