Diese Arzneimittel sollen körperliche Entzugserscheinungen lindern. Nikotinersatzpräparate sind beispielsweise als Pflaster oder Kaugummis erhältlich. Voraussetzung für eine Verordnung zulasten der Krankenkasse wird sein, dass eine schwere Tabakabhängigkeit vorliegt. Drei Monate nach Behandlungsbeginn muss überprüft werden, ob eine medikamentöse Behandlung weiterhin notwendig ist. Bei einer späteren Rückfälligkeit besteht ein erneuter Anspruch frühestens nach drei Jahren. Die begleitenden evidenzbasierten Programme zur Tabakentwöhnung müssen u. a. Hintergrundwissen zum Rauchverhalten und zur Tabakentwöhnung vermitteln.
