Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) geht nach derzeitigem Stand (Mai 2022) bereits von 92 bestätigten und 28 Verdachtsfällen in den WHO-Mitgliedstaaten aus. Auch in Deutschland wurden bisher 3 Fälle bestätigt. Die Erkrankung verläuft größtenteils mild, kann allerdings auch schwere Symptome bis hin zum Tod nach sich ziehen. Seit Anfang des Jahres gibt es das bisher einzige zugelassene Medikament, Tecovirimat, gegen Pocken, Affen- und Kuhpocken.
